  • ANCIEN 003

After years spent living and working in the Middle East, ancient jewellery for me tends to evoke images of lapis lazuli, carnelian, turquoise and gold – materials that were highly prized by the ancient civilisations of Mesopotamia and Egypt alike. For this two-stranded necklace, lapis lazuli heishi from Afghanistan have been combined with simple hammered discs of 24k gold vermeil to achieve a modern take on an ancient theme. Everything about this piece spells precious.
Length: longest strand = 85.5cm/33.75 inches, shortest = 80cm/31.5 inches.

Materials: Afghan lapis lazuli; 24k gold-plated Karen Thai Hilltribe .970 silver; Bali 24k gold-plated .925 silver; Karen Thai Hilltribe .970 silver; 14/20 gold fill (rolled gold).

  • ANCIEN 004

Not for the faint of heart, this simple yet flamboyant necklace illustrates just so well the natural affinity of turquoise and gold, except that here I have utilised one of the more common substitutes for real turquoise – dyed howlite – and 24k vermeil, i.e., heavy gold-plated silver. The desirability of turquoise is such that it is not just recently that human beings have sought to imitate it. The earliest known simulants – all of them beads – were produced in the Middle East around 8000 years ago from fossilised animal teeth or tusks heat treated with mineral oxides.
    Length: 71cm/28 inches

Materials: Dyed howlite; 24k gold-plated Karen Thai Hilltribe .970 silver; Bali 24k gold-plated .925 silver; 14/20 gold fill (rolled gold).

  • ANCIEN 006

Length: longest strand = 65.5cm/25.75 inches, shortest strand = 60.5cm/23.75 inches.

Materials: Afghan lapis lazuli; West Australian Mookaite; 24k gold-plated Karen Thai Hilltribe .970 silver; Bali 24k gold-plated .925 silver; 14/20 gold fill (rolled gold).

About Me

With a background in Middle Eastern Archaeology, as well as long-standing interests in traditional crafts and craftsmanship, ethnic jewellery and furniture design, my jewellery is inspired equally by ancient cultures, the souqs and bazaars of the Middle East, and by mid-Twentieth century design.

The materials for my designs are sourced from around the world – from Australia, Africa, India, the Middle East, China, Afghanistan, Thailand, Bali, the United States – wherever there are beautiful beads to be had. A family pastime of gemstone fossicking and subsequent geology studies has also given me an interest in rare and unusual stones, so that while I am attracted to the strong geometric form and uniformity of machine-cut stone beads, which can show the inherent beauty of a stone, I love the surprise element and natural feel of freeform and rough-cut materials.

With my pieces I want people to feel as though they are wearing something precious, but which is still very much affordable.
